This 26.5-meter-tall abstract tower sculpture is a conical tower made of aluminum and stainless steel. Aluminum tubes are compressed and held in tension by stainless steel cables threaded through the ends of the tubes, forming a slender, flexible spire that seems to disappear into infinite distance. The tower is constructed from steel cables and aluminum rods that get progressively thinner and thinner towards the top, giving the illusion that it is floating in mid-air. Viewed from directly below, the structure forms a star-shaped web.
Needle Tower – A Landmark for the New Century
Looking up from within, one could see the Star of David. Within the Needle Tower Sculpture, the six points come from the natural geometrical shape of three compressed struts that make up each layer. Three spiral modules alternating left and right in groups of three, making a total of six when viewed from the base of the tower upwards, form a unique star pattern.
Such a Needle Tower sculpture evokes the skeleton of a tower or skyscraper. They are arrangements of spatial elements, fascinated by universal geometrical principles, constructed with scientific precision in the way nature builds.
Tensegrity Structure
The structural style of this Needle Tower is known as “tensegrity,” a term coined by Snelson’s former professor Buckminster Fuller to describe the melding of tension and structural integrity. As Snelson explained:
“Tensegrity describes a closed structural system composed of a set of three or more elongate compression struts within a network of tension tendons, the combined parts mutually supportive in such a way that the struts do not touch one another, but press outwardly against nodal points in the tension network to form a firm, triangulated, prestressed, tension and compression unit.”
