Where Is the Bean Sculpture in Chicago?

What Is The Bean?

 

The Bean is officially called Cloud Gate.

British artist Anish Kapoor designed the sculpture, and it was his first permanent outdoor public work installed in the United States. The work uses a highly polished stainless steel surface to reflect Chicago’s skyline, clouds and the people walking around it.

Its smooth curved form makes the surrounding city appear stretched, compressed and distorted.

That interaction is one reason the sculpture works so well in a public space. People do not simply look at it from a distance. They walk around it, touch the surface, stand underneath it and see themselves reflected inside the artwork.

 

Why Is It Called “The Bean”?

 

“The Bean” is a nickname inspired by the sculpture’s curved, bean-like form.

Its official name, Cloud Gate, describes another important part of the design. The polished surface captures both the sky and the city, while the large opening beneath the sculpture creates a passage visitors can walk through.

The City of Chicago describes a roughly 12-foot-high arch leading into the concave space underneath the sculpture.

Although Cloud Gate is the formal name, “The Bean” became the name most visitors remember.

 

How Big Is the Bean in Chicago?

Cloud Gate is much larger than photographs sometimes suggest.

Its approximate dimensions are:

Length: 66 ft (20 m)
Height: 33 ft (10 m)
Weight: about 110 tons

The scale is important.

A reflective sculpture needs enough size to interact with the architecture around it. In the case of Cloud Gate, the surface reflects skyscrapers, sky, trees and crowds. The city effectively becomes part of the sculpture.

A beautiful form that looks impressive at 2 meters tall may feel completely different when enlarged to 6 or 10 meters. Viewing distance, surrounding architecture and pedestrian movement all affect the final proportions.

 

What Is the Chicago Bean Made Of?

Cloud Gate is made from highly polished stainless steel.

The finished surface appears almost continuous, without obvious visible joints. This seamless appearance is one of the most technically interesting parts of the work.

For people outside the sculpture industry, mirror polishing may look like the final step that creates the effect.

In reality, the quality of a mirror-polished sculpture begins much earlier.

From our experience producing large stainless steel sculptures, we pay close attention to:

• the accuracy of the underlying shape
• stainless steel panel forming
• welding control
• distortion during fabrication
• grinding of welded joints
• repeated polishing stages
• internal structural support
• final installation alignment

A polishing machine cannot correct a badly formed surface.

If the curvature is uneven before polishing, the finished mirror will reveal those imperfections very clearly.

That is one reason large reflective sculptures require more work than their simple appearance might suggest.

 

Why Does Cloud Gate Look Seamless?

Large stainless steel sculptures usually cannot be fabricated from one enormous piece of metal.

Instead, manufacturers form multiple stainless steel sections and connect them into the final shape.

The real challenge is making those connections disappear visually.

In our factory, a typical large mirror-polished sculpture goes through several stages.

We first develop the form digitally and determine how the surface can be divided into practical fabrication sections. Our craftsmen then form the stainless steel panels according to the required curvature.

After assembly, we weld the joints and carefully grind the welds.

Polishing comes later.

The surface passes through progressively finer finishing steps until reflections become clean and continuous.

On a highly reflective sculpture, even a slight wave, depression or badly treated weld can become obvious under sunlight.

This is why forming, welding, grinding and polishing need to be treated as one continuous process, rather than four unrelated jobs.

 

What Makes a Large Mirror Sculpture Difficult to Build?

People often ask us why large mirror-polished sculptures cost more than ordinary metal decorations.

Material is only one part of the answer.

The Shape Is Difficult to Control

Curved and organic forms usually require more forming work than simple geometric panels.

Double-curved surfaces are especially demanding because every neighboring panel must meet smoothly.

The Internal Structure Matters

A monumental sculpture needs an engineered internal frame.

We consider the sculpture’s height, weight, wind exposure, lifting points and connection to the foundation.

For outdoor projects, the structure behind the shiny surface is just as important as the surface itself.

Mirror Finishing Shows Every Imperfection

Brushed stainless steel can visually soften some small surface variations.

Mirror polish does the opposite.

It turns the surface into a giant visual test. Reflected building lines and horizon lines immediately reveal uneven areas.

Transportation Changes the Design

Very large sculptures often need to be divided into transportable modules.

We therefore consider shipping dimensions before fabrication begins.

The goal is to place module connections where they can be assembled and refinished without damaging the visual effect.

Site Installation Requires Planning

For public projects, we normally consider:

anchor bolts,
base plates,
foundation drawings,
lifting positions,
module connections,
site access,
and final surface treatment.

Large public art is rarely just “make the sculpture and ship it.”

Installation is part of the sculpture project from the beginning.

 

304 or 316 Stainless Steel for Mirror Sculptures?

Cloud Gate is a unique artwork, so we do not use it as a direct specification guide for every project.

For the sculptures we manufacture, material selection depends primarily on the installation environment.

For many inland projects, 304 stainless steel provides a practical balance of durability, appearance and cost.

For coastal locations, swimming pool areas, high-humidity environments or places with more salt exposure, we generally recommend 316 stainless steel because of its stronger corrosion resistance.

This decision is especially important for mirror-polished work.

A reflective finish is chosen because the client wants a very clean visual appearance, so corrosion staining or poor material selection becomes especially noticeable.

 

 

Why Has The Bean Become Such Successful Public Art?

Cloud Gate demonstrates several qualities that are useful when planning public sculpture.

First, the form is easy to recognize.

Second, people can interact with it without needing an explanation.

Third, its appearance changes throughout the day because the surrounding environment changes.

Finally, it works at both long and short viewing distances.

From far away, visitors see a monumental silver form.

From close up, they see their own distorted reflections.

Public sculpture becomes more memorable when the viewer is not only an observer but also part of the visual experience.

That principle can apply to many original stainless steel sculptures, even when the design looks nothing like Cloud Gate.

 

Can You Buy a Replica of the Chicago Bean?

For a new commercial or public-art project, we recommend creating an original reflective sculpture rather than copying Cloud Gate’s exact form.

Cloud Gate is a site-specific work by Anish Kapoor. Instead of reproducing it, architects, landscape designers and developers can use similar material ideas in a completely new design.
