John Robinson’s Take on Intuition:
Sculptor John Robinson once said that this triangular sculpture represents a knotted and stable core within a knowledge center, often without apparent reason, from which the spark of creativity and invention comes. We call these sparks intuitions. Sparks shoot in all directions, but from the core of the experience. Shortly after finishing the sculpture, I received a letter from Dr. Peter Cromwell with a photo of a 9th-century Scandinavian runestone showing “The Star of Wotan”. Here is a version of my sculpture! Perhaps one-day Intuition will house a mathematical pantheon, as structural engineer Ove Arup envisions.
John Robinson’s Creative History:
In the early 1970s, Robinson began creating symbolic sculptures for the Cosmos series, which now includes more than a hundred works, including sculptures in bronze, wood, stainless steel, and marble, as well as 11 tapestries. Selected works have been exhibited in Leeds, Bangor, Liverpool, Wadham College Oxford, Churchill College Cambridge, London, Barcelona, and Zaragoza. Each piece is a visual interpretation of the artist’s emotions; each is created in forms found in nature, such as triangles, spirals, ovals, circles, and cones.
