Jeffrey Lynn Koons is an American artist born on January 21, 1955, in York, Pennsylvania, where he also lives and works, including in New York City. He was inspired to paint by Salvador Dali from an early age. Koons attended the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is a contemporary artist known for his large sculptures that are pop culture icons depicting mass media items such as toys, birthday gifts, decorations and various other paraphernalia we can find in stores.
Celebration Series (1994–2000)
In the early 1990s, Koons began his signature sculptures as we know him or the Celebration series of his most outstanding sculptures. These were also inspired by children’s toys and inflatable balloon animals, especially when his son Ludwig was very young. The collection includes pieces such as flowers, hearts, Easter eggs, and various balloon animals. There is a playfulness to sculpture and an inner play with other ideas, such as life and death, and the loss of childhood innocence that almost becomes a desire for material things and status.
